Troy Vassos, Senior Environmental Engineer
About
I have 38 years of experience in industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment process design, regulatory and standards development, technology performance verification, operations support and optimization and effluent disposal and reuse, and I am also an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Civil Engineering, Environment Engineering Group, at the University of British Columbia. My current focus is in the area of integrated water management, in particular water reclamation and reuse, for both the industrial and municipal sectors.
Having worked as an environmental engineering for several years, with a downturn in the economy in 1982-83, I returned to university to complete a PhD while co-founding NovaTec Consultants Inc. in 1984, a process engineering firm specializing in the design, operation, assessment, optimization and performance verification of industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment systems. NovaTec merged with Golder Associates Ltd. in January 2013, and in February 2016 I left Golder to resume my practice as an independent consultant.
NovaTec developed a reputation as specialists in water and wastewater process design in biological nutrient removal and industrial wastewater treatment, including the pulp & paper, seafood, and food processing sectors. Industrial wastewater requires research funding, and I discovered an aptitude for engaging government funding agencies in co-funding applied research. I established three wastewater technology performance verification testing facilities that carried out independent third party water treatment equipment validation and certification testing, as well as assisting companies with product development research. This expertise was used to carry out due diligence assessments of advanced and emerging water treatment technologies on behalf of prospective investors, as well as trouble-shooting and optimizing treatment facilities.
Volunteer activities include numerous provincial, national, and international technical and professional organizations, committees, and advisory boards including various provincial, state and international regulatory development assignments.
