About
The mission of the Fitchburg DPW Wastewater Division is to convey and treat domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater to a level that meets or exceeds water quality limits for the Nashua River as set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible.
The Wastewater Division has a staff of thirty individuals consisting of a Deputy Commissioner, Plant Superintendent, Maintenance Engineer, Office Manager, fifteen Senior Operators, one Chemist, five Equipment Repairers, one Assistant Mechanic, an Inventory Control Clerk, Electrician and two Instrumentation Repairers; Collection System Manager, GIS Engineer, and a six-person Collection System Operations Crew.
The Wastewater Division’s primary function is to treat the city’s wastewater to a level that meets or exceeds the stringent standards set by MADEP and USEPA, and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 220 miles of sewer lines that make up the collection system. The department accepts flow not only from Fitchburg residents and businesses, but also serves the needs of the neighboring communities of Lunenburg and Westminster. In addition to treating wastewater, the Wastewater Division also provides several area communities with sludge and septage disposal services to insure a safe and reliable disposal method for these wastes, while generating revenue which helps in offsetting the cost to residents.
