Best Technology for Treating Abattoir Wastewater Before Discharging Into the System
Published on by PHETLA MANGENA, Water quality at WEB Bonaire in Technology
I am monitoring industries which slaughter 15000 cattle, 500 sheep, 200 pigs per month. With the recommendation of the following standards:
Determinants | limits | units |
---|---|---|
pH | 5.7 - 8.4 | pH |
COD | 2380 - 8942 | mg/l |
SS | 189 - 3330 | mg/l |
TDS | 595 - 2805 | mg/l |
TKN | 0.71 - 24 | mg/l |
Always when I receive results from the abattoir, the results show noncompliance to all determinants except pH and TDS. At abattoir, we are using pre-treatment such as caustic, three phases such as primary, secondary and tertiary treatment but final effluent does not comply with the standards. All of the waste from the cattle, sheep and pig are taken out.
My question was:
- What is the best methods of reducing TNK to a required limit?
- What is required to ensure that all of the determinants are complying?
- Does too much slaughtering have effects on some of the parameters?

You have a lot of fats in your influent stream, I suggest you split it into 2.
Use DAF to remove fats and light TSS, and send it to an anaerobic reactor, the effluent from the DAF send to an aerobic reactor and the effluent from the anaerobic clarifier send also to the aerobic reactor, then use a clarifier and a RAS system to your aerobic reactor.

There is wide variation in values of parameters. We need Screen chamber and the equalization tank as a part of pre-treatment. If equalization tank is not provided then it affects on the performance of secondary treatment. The anaerobic treatment will be better option to recover the energy. The Anaerobically treated Waste water can be treated further aerobically by activated sludge process. Trickling filter may be used for aerobically treated ww for nitrogen removal. Sludge generated can be used as manure. For further details you may contact me on sarafrv@virajenvirozing.com

You might find that the Draconis System will suit your needs. www.newrangepower.com

PHETLA MANGENA what a waste of resources. You are not creating any valuable resources from your waste stream. Follow Anaerobic Treatment reduce your BOD, COD, SS by 75~80%. Followed by Sand / Dual Media Filter. The water is good for agriculture purpose. The Sludge & its water can be used as organic fertilizer.

Hello Phetla.
Have a look at the Parkson website for the Biolac System it is perfect and used widely in the abboitoir sector. Good luck with your challenging project.

You can reduce that by using bio-reactors since they are capable of hydrolysing the waste
